SAFE TALK
Just Culture.

Hey everyone! Welcome to this month’s Safe Talk! Today, we’re diving into Just Culture—a concept that emphasizes fairness, safety, and growth in the workplace. Join us as we explore how Just Culture can enhance our workplace, uncovering the ways it can foster improvement and support for everyone. Let’s get started!

So, what exactly is Just Culture? Imagine a workplace where, when something goes wrong, the first question isn’t “Who messed up?” but “What went wrong?” Instead of blaming people, we focus on understanding why the mistake happened and how we can fix the system so it doesn’t happen again. This approach creates an atmosphere where people feel comfortable reporting mistakes, knowing they won’t be unfairly punished.

But, Just Culture doesn’t mean people can’t be held accountable. If someone knowingly breaks the rules or is careless, they can still face consequences. The key difference is that the focus is on addressing behaviors, not just the outcome. Honest mistakes become learning opportunities, while reckless actions might lead to discipline.

In a system of just culture, discipline is linked to inappropriate behavior, rather than harm. This allows. for personal accountability while promoting a culture of learning. Honest mistakes become opportunities for growth, while reckless or deliberate actions may still lead to consequences, even if no harm was done.

A Just Culture Decision Tree is a helpful tool that organizations use to respond to incidents and mistakes in a fair and balanced way.  Instead of focusing only on punishment, it emphasizes accountability, understanding, and improvement. This approach encourages employees to feel safe reporting errors and learning from them. The decision tree asks a series of questions to better understand what happened, such as:

  • Was the action done on purpose?
  • If it was intentional, was it reckless or deliberate?
  • If it wasn’t intentional, was it a common rule-break or just an accident, slip-up, or mistake?

In a Just Culture, the goal is to encourage everyone to participate in making the workplace safer. At PassionAir, we believe that by focusing on understanding behavior and improving our systems, we can reduce risks and enhance safety. We all share the responsibility to keep each other safe, and Just Culture helps us do that by promoting fairness and accountability. JB&ST
