Takoradi is the other half of the twin cities of Sekondi-Takoradi located in the Western region. Takoradi is an industrial and commercial center with a population of over 445,205 (2012). The city is currently named as the Oil City of Ghana though not officially, due to the massive discovery of oil in the western region and has attracted massive migration from people all around the world.
During World War II Takoradi was used as an important staging post for RAF destined for Egypt. Fighter planes were shipped in crates from England to Takoradi where they were assembled and flown via Nigeria and Sudan to the war in Libya.
